Sustainable Design: A Critical and Reflective Dialogue

The idea that design is an essential tool for changing the world is an undeniable premise. Everything that can help us transform and improve the way we live stems from the fact that someone must have previously conducted a study, proposed, or meticulously designed something to provide us with the appropriate guidelines for achieving the desired change.

This grand concept we call ‘design’ impacts our way of living and how we understand and recreate reality. This creative field allows us to make sense of the entire material environment we perceive, to assign it a value of meaning, and thus adopt it as part of a reality (cultural, material, visual, etc.) that we are constructing.

The Influence of Product Design and Development

The influence of design in our lives extends to every imaginable aspect, from architecture to landscaping, commerce, mobility, nutrition, and even the most productive and entrepreneurial endeavors. There is no doubt about its strategic value. The success of design lies in its ability to add value to ideas.

Indeed, design is a crucial factor in the creation and evolution of relationships and connections in our society. It is capable of adapting and tuning in to current needs and lifestyles, fostering critical and reflective discussion about social and cultural issues. Moreover, it has a significant influence on how we interact with public space and how this affects our everyday experiences.

Design plays a crucial role in the engineering sector, particularly in the design and development of products. The intersection between industrial design and industrial design engineering has resulted in a synergistic collaboration that enhances the functionality, aesthetics, and efficiency of products. The close relationship between these fields allows engineers to incorporate design elements from the early stages of development, ensuring that products not only meet technical requirements but also satisfy the needs and expectations of the end user.

Attention to design not only enhances the visual appearance of products but also optimizes usability, ergonomics, and user experience, essential factors for success in an increasingly competitive market.

The Importance of Sustainability in Product Design

In modern society, one of the most pressing issues in recent years is addressing and improving the environmental problems we face. Undoubtedly, it is now vital to create products and services that have a positive environmental and social impact. In an increasingly environmentally conscious world and the need to protect natural resources, sustainable design has become an increasingly relevant and noticeable priority.

According to design scholar Ezio Manzini, sustainable design is a strategic activity that transforms existing systems and creates new ones characterized by low-energy intensity materials and a high potential for regenerating life contexts.

Since we started with i-mas, the product design department has always been committed to ensuring that designs are effective, functional, and, above all, sustainable. We are passionate about creativity, information, technology, and innovation to ultimately create unique and impactful solutions, both in product design and development and in other services. We always consider the three dimensions of sustainability: economic, social, and environmental.
