From defects in metal surfaces to dimensional errors in plastic parts, training AI to detect faults requires much more than a neural network: it involves building a robust system based on quality data, well-selected models, and a rigorous validation process.  <\/p>\n\n<p>In this article, we analyze the key steps for developing an effective<strong> AI-based <\/strong>defect detection solution, with direct applications in <strong>industrial automation<\/strong>, <strong>machine vision<\/strong>, and <strong>robotics<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Data collection and preparation<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n<p>Any <strong>AI model <\/strong>is only as good as the data it is trained on. In the case of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/i-mas.com\/en\/the-role-of-hyperspectral-vision-in-industry-4-0\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">defect detection using computer vision<\/a><\/strong>, large volumes of correctly labeled visual data are required: images of parts in normal conditions and with various defects (cracks, burrs, stains, deformations, etc.).  <\/p>\n\n<p>It is essential to balance the database to avoid bias: often there are few samples of defects compared to thousands of correct parts. To correct this, techniques such as the following can be applied:  <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Data augmentation <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Synthetic generation of images with simulated defects <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Accurate annotation with collaborative labeling tools <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>Image quality (resolution, lighting, focus) also directly affects model performance. Standardizing the capture process is key to avoiding noise in training.  <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Choosing the right AI model<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n<p>The type of model will depend on the specific problem: <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>For classifying parts as \u201ccorrect\u201d or \u201cdefective\u201d:<strong> simple CNNs (convolutional neural networks).<\/strong> <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For locating specific defects:<strong> detection models such as YOLO, Faster R-CNN, or SSD.<\/strong> <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For pixel-by-pixel segmentation (precise detection of the defective area): <strong>U-Net, DeepLab, Mask R-CNN.<\/strong> <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>It is important to consider latency, computational cost, and ease of integration with existing industrial <a href=\"https:\/\/i-mas.com\/en\/what-types-of-industrial-automation-are-there-and-what-advantages-do-they-offer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>automation systems <\/strong><\/a>(PLC, SCADA, etc.). Sometimes, less complex but fast and explainable models may be preferable to more accurate but opaque or slow solutions.  <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Integration into industrial automation environments<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n<p>Once the model has been validated, it must be integrated into the production environment.
