{"id":28568,"date":"2025-03-13T11:39:29","date_gmt":"2025-03-13T10:39:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/i-mas.com\/?p=28568"},"modified":"2025-03-13T11:39:30","modified_gmt":"2025-03-13T10:39:30","slug":"the-evolution-of-industrial-automation-from-2005-to-the-present-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/i-mas.com\/en\/the-evolution-of-industrial-automation-from-2005-to-the-present-day\/","title":{"rendered":"The evolution of industrial automation: from 2005 to the present day"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i-mas.com\/en\/?p=28103\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Industrial automation <\/strong><\/a>has undergone an impressive evolution over the past 20 years, driven by advances in digital technologies, <strong>robotics<\/strong>, <strong>artificial intelligence<\/strong> and <strong>connectivity<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n<p>In this article, we explore the most significant milestones in <strong>industrial automation<\/strong> from 2005 to the present day. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The rise of programmable automation (2005-2010)<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n<p>In the mid-2000s, <strong>industrial automation <\/strong>was dominated by programmable systems such as Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) and Distributed Control Systems (DCS). During this period, companies began to implement SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems to monitor and control <strong>industrial processes <\/strong>remotely.  <\/p>\n\n<p>During this period, the use of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/i-mas.com\/en\/the-evolution-of-robotics-from-2005-to-the-present-day\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">industrial robots<\/a><\/strong> also increased in sectors such as automotive and electronics manufacturing, where <strong>robotic arms<\/strong> optimized assembly, welding and painting processes. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Connectivity and digitization (2010-2015)<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n<p>Between 2010 and 2015, <strong>digitalization <\/strong>began to transform<strong> industrial automation<\/strong>. The advent of<strong> IoT (Internet of Things) <\/strong>technology allowed industrial machines to be connected to networks, facilitating real-time data collection and analysis.  <\/p>\n\n<p>Industries began to adopt predictive <strong>maintenance techniques<\/strong>, where intelligent sensors monitored the condition of machines and prevented failures before they occurred. In addition, the development of MES (Manufacturing Execution System) software made it possible to optimize production management in factories.  <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Industry 4.0 and Artificial Intelligence (2015-2020)<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n<p>The concept of<strong> Industry 4.0 <\/strong>was consolidated at this stage, integrating technologies such as <strong>Big Data, machine learning,<a href=\"https:\/\/i-mas.com\/en\/the-evolution-of-machine-vision-from-2005-to-the-present-day\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> machine vision<\/a> and artificial intelligence (AI)<\/strong> into industrial processes. <strong>Automation <\/strong>no longer involved only the repetition of tasks, but also autonomous decision-making based on data analysis.  <\/p>\n\n<p>This decade also saw the emergence of <strong>cobots (<a href=\"https:\/\/i-mas.com\/en\/collaborative-robots-safety-and-precision-on-the-production-line\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">collaborative robots<\/a>)<\/strong>, designed to work alongside humans without the need for safety barriers. These robots made it possible to automate tasks in smaller industries and in environments where <strong>traditional automation<\/strong> was too costly.  <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Road to Autonomous Automation (2020-2025)<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n<p>Recent years have seen an accelerated move towards <strong>autonomous automation<\/strong>, where machines can operate without human intervention in dynamic and unstructured environments. <strong>5G <\/strong>networks have enabled improved connectivity of IoT devices, facilitating real-time remote control of machinery.  <\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Smart factories<\/strong> have begun to adopt <strong>digital twins<\/strong>, a technology that creates a virtual representation of industrial systems to simulate and optimize operations without affecting actual production. <\/p>\n\n<p>Mobile robotics has also advanced considerably, with the use of <strong>autonomous guided vehicles (AGVs) and autonomous mobile robots (AMRs)<\/strong> in warehouses and production lines. Companies such as Amazon have revolutionized logistics through the intensive use of <strong>automated picking<\/strong> and transport robots.  <\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Industrial automation <\/strong>has moved from programmable, isolated systems to interconnected, intelligent and autonomous environments.
